A team of four students from New Albany Middle School (NAMS) recently attended the District Junior High Mathematics Competition held for area seventh and eighth graders.   Sponsored by the Mississippi Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the competition was held at Northeast Mississippi Community College on March 6.

Twenty-three schools from the Northeast Mississippi area participated in the competition.  Representing NAMS was seventh grade students Shaun Vaughn and Jamie Crow and eighth grade students Arturo Valles and Brandon Wilson.  The students are coached by Melissa Tate.

This year NAMS scored 104 total points and placed fourth overall.  Vaughn placed third in the seventh grade competition while Valles placed fifth in the eight grade.

Coach Melissa Tate commended the students their efforts.  Students prepared for the test by giving up their free time and also spent time after school working with her.

“The competition is a great thing for students,” Tate said.  “It prepares students for the ACT because it is timed and the questions are similar.”

NAMS Principal Lecia Stubblefield commended Tate and the students for their hard work and dedication in the mathematics area.  “I am thrilled with the progress we have made since last year,” she said.  “We increased our total score from 73 points to 104 points and moved from eleventh place a year ago to fourth this year.”

Stubblefield added, “Our goal is to be the best Middle School in Mississippi.  This is one of the areas we are focusing on and will continue to strive for improvement.”
