The Mississippi Department of Education released the results of Mississippi’s statewide assessments in August.

The Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP), which assesses student performance in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics in grades 3-8, as well as English II and Algebra I.

Students scoring at Level 4 or 5, the proficient or advanced categories, are meeting or exceeding grade-level expectations. The scores suggest that students have a thorough understanding of grade-level content and are on the right track to being ready for college-level coursework.

In all grade levels and subject areas tested, the NASD had a greater percentage of students scoring at Level 4 or 5 when compared to students state wide scoring in the proficient and advanced categories.

The district ranked in the top 10% of districts across the state in 5th grade ELA.  In English II at the high school level, only 2.8% of the students scored in the lowest category of proficiency demonstrating that students are advance to higher levels of proficiency when tested in ELA.

In Algebra I, NASD ranked in the top 12% of districts state wide with higher than 80% of students scoring at Level 4 or 5 and ALL students achieving a passing score on the End of Course assessment.

Assessment results also included Grades 5 & 8 Science, Biology I, and United States History.   In each of these four assessments, NASD had average scale scores well above the state average.

“These annual assessments provide important information about student progress and areas for improvement,” explained Lance Evans, Superintendent.   “We will use these results to help drive our instruction and to formulate plans where we can prepare all students for success during this school year.”
