COOMBS SPEAKS TO NAHS HONOR STUDENTS

Braxton Coombs, a 2005 graduate of New Albany High School, returned to his alma mater on Monday, May 12 as the guest speaker for the NAHS Honors’ Breakfast.  Coombs is currently serving as Student Body President at Mississippi State University.  He is pursuing a double major in Business and Economics and is a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Order of Omega Honor Society. Over the past three years at MSU, Coombs has served as Director of Campus Outreach, a member of the Freshman Forum, Student Association Attorney General, and as a Roadrunner (a student recruiting organization).

Coombs message to the New Albany High School honor students focused on what they can do to prepare themselves for the next level, whether that is college, work, or the next step in their high school career.  He encouraged them to take advantage of the educational opportunities offered by NAHS and he challenged them to get involved in student organizations to make the most of their high school years.

“NAHS is really willing to go the extra mile to give you everything that you need,” said Coombs. “I felt tremendously prepared for my classes when I graduated from New Albany High School. My senior research paper was one important learning experience that I had in high school.  Learning how to research and write effectively has helped me in many of my classes at MSU.”  He added, “You have great teachers who want to work with you and help you.”

Coombs also emphasized the importance of being involved in student activities.  He related how being involved in the student association and other student organizations at Mississippi State had enriched his college experience.  “Mississippi State has over 300 student organizations that allow students to get involved.  Anyone can make a difference by participating in student groups,” he said.  “You have many opportunities right here at New Albany High School, too.  Find something you love to do, something that you get excited about every morning.  Leave New Albany High School better than you found it; leave something great for the students who follow you.”

Coombs quoted former Lieutenant Governor, Amy Tuck who said that Mississippi State has pools of potential and oceans of opportunity.  He said the same is true for New Albany High School.  The honor students attending the program offer pools of potential for the future of the school and community and NAHS provides an ocean of opportunity for student achievement.  “You have the potential for great things.  You can leave a lasting impact here, in the next level, and in life.”

“I loved getting to speak to New Albany High School today,” said Coombs, “I have had the opportunity to speak to hundreds of student groups, but it is always great to come home.”  Coombs added, “I could not have accomplished what I have at MSU without the support of the people of New Albany.”
