On Sunday, November 10, 2013, Alison Moore, New Albany High School teacher and Future Business Leaders of America sponsor, left New Albany headed to Orlando, Florida with eighteen students. The purpose of the trip was to participate in two Disney Y.E.S. (Youth Education Series) programs.

Disney Youth Education Series programs take place in the information-rich setting of the Disney Parks and give students – and their teachers – a hands-on, educational adventure.  The Future Business leaders participated in a collection of accredited, standards-based, guided field studies in the area of Leadership Development. The students had to practice teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and step out of their comfort zones as Disney cast members took them on a memorable journey using the magic of Disney to make learning even more impactful.

FBLAdisney2The students and chaperones completed two programs during their stay, “Learning Teamwork through Improvisation” and “The Art of Animation.” Both programs focused on leadership, innovation, risk taking, and team work. The Disney cast members emphasized the importance of working together with a positive attitude to complete every task they gave the students.

This trip provided the students many valuable life-lessons. From planning, meeting deadlines and raising money to learning how to navigate through an airport and read park maps, the students made memories and connections that would not have been possible without going on this journey.

In the words of one student, “This trip was an amazing leadership experience! It required me to step out of my box and get involved, and I learned many things I will apply later in life.”
