Students in Alison Moore’s Business, Marketing, and Finance II class at the New Albany School of Career & Technical Education spent time at The 1907 Event Venue this morning. Following a guided tour of the facility, owner, Michelle Robbins, and her daughter Erin, spoke with the students about their entrepreneurial journey. They discussed topics which included certifications and licensing, incorporation, and zoning. They also spoke with them about investing, return on investment, and about how interest rates affect the total cost of purchasing property. Additionally, they talked with them about the risks associated with entrepreneurship, how the demand for an event venue in New Albany changed the course of their original plan for the house, and about the positives and negatives of owning a small business. Not only does Michelle own The 1907 Event Venue, but also she and Erin are partners in E & T Floral Designs. As part of the tour today, Erin guided the students in a floral design lesson where each student was allowed to design his or her own arrangement. The students found the tour very engaging. They each walked away more knowledgeable about entrepreneurship and small business ownership as well as with beautiful vases of flowers. This hands-on learning experience was made possible by the Industry Certification Grant Program.
