Good day, my fellow New Albany people! I hope everyone has had a good week so far. Here is the weekly news to keep you updated.
Senorita Savannah Minnick will be leading an EF educational tour to Spain during spring break 2011. The deadline for enrollment is February 28, 2010. The parent meeting is Thursday 2/18 at 6:00 in the media center. Activities while in Spain include: visiting the Prado museum in Madrid and seeing works by famous artists. Touring the Alhambra, the 14th century Moorish palace where Christopher Columbus asked permission to sail to India. Touring the third largest cathedral in the world in Seville and climbing its 300 ft. tower for a fantastic view of the city. Touring Seville's bullring and enjoying Mediterranean culture while visiting Costa del Sol. Making friends with other students from around the country who will be touring with EF.
The VISTA staff received an honorable mention for Best Theme in the nationwide "Yearbook, Yearbook" competition. All yearbooks, from elementary to college level books are in competition with each other. This is a major accomplishment for our VISTA staff.
On February 10, 2010 students of Mary Beth Muncie and Lee Ann Thompson from the New Albany High School Gifted Art and Drama classes took a field trip to Memphis. The day began at Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley. Twenty seven students toured the home and grounds of “The King”, and then moved on to the Brooks Museum of Art where they were guided in small groups by docents. Afterwards, the group walked across Overton Park to the Memphis College of Art. MCA students gave tours of the college and spent time talking to the group about portfolio requirements and the “real” life of an art student. The next stop was downtown Memphis for the bundled up crew (27 degrees). A trolley ride on the Riverfront Loop showed the students views of the river, the Pyramid and downtown. At 5:00 p.m., students were lined up along the red carpet of the Peabody Hotel to see the world famous ducks make their way from the fountain to their rooftop palace. The group then made their way across the street for dinner at the Rendezvous where they enjoyed BBQ and ribs. The final stop of the evening was the Orpheum Theatre where the group thoroughly enjoyed the Broadway musical “Jersey Boys” the true story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.
There will be a sign up sheet in the office for any girls interested in trying out for cheerleader. Spring sports are up and running but weather is making it difficult to practice. Baseball begins play Feb 20 at Columbus 3:30 and New Hope 12:30. Our boys and girls basketball teams are playing for division championships at ICC. Both teams advanced to first round playoffs. Thank you for supporting our teams!
Thursday, February 11, was Mix It Up Day hosted by the Jr. ROTC during lunch. Mix it up is a day where everyone gets out of their comfort zones to meet new people. We hope that everyone participated by taking a new seat in the cafeteria. Here are some very positive quotes from some students who participated: “Mix it up day had an overall positive impact on me. I met two freshmen girls I’d never met before and as it turns out, we have a lot in common!” –Callie Creekmore. “I met a few new people, who I’d never met before. They had a lot of the same interests as me. Guess I should switch up my seat more often.” –Madi Van Zile. “I really enjoyed the change. I sat with some guys I haven’t ever really talked to before. Now I have another person to wave to in the hallways!” –Kellie McClelland. “I thought it was a great experience. I got to talk to many people that I usually don’t get the chance of chatting with.” –Caroline Tate. “It was fun for me. I got to see people I haven’t talked to in a while. It was good to catch up.” –Shelby Newell.
The Week of February 15 is National School Board Week. We had different themes throughout the week: Monday-College Day: Teachers stressed the importance of continuing education by sharing their college experience: where they attended, course majors offered, clubs and organizational involvement, scholarships, etc. Students were encouraged to wear clothes supporting their favorite college. Tuesday-Non-Traditional Day at the Career and Technical Center: Students had the opportunity to visit the other classes offered at the Career and Technical Center and explore the different careers associated with each program. The goal was for them to be exposed to careers that they might not have otherwise chosen for themselves or valued.  Wednesday-Professional Day & Assembly: Students were asked to dress according to the profession they wish to pursue. An assembly recognizing board members was held.
