The New Albany High School Air Force JROTC Air Rifle Team recently finished #5 in the nation in the All Air Force JROTC Air Rifle Championship Postal Matches.

“There were 430 competitors nationwide and our shooters consistently ranked well against the competition,” said ROTC Instructor SMSgt Jim McCarty.  Tiffany Westmoreland finished 3rd overall in the nation, while Meghan Davis finished 14th and Jonathan Rodriguez was 38th.

Five members of the team have qualified to the next level of national competition.  They will attend the 2010 Air Force JROTC Air Rifle Service Championship, which will be held at Camp Perry near Cleveland, Ohio in late February.  Those chosen to represent New Albany High School in this JROTC Team event are Meghan Davis, Christy Harrison, Jonathan Rodriguez, Lawanda Tanner, and Tiffany Westmoreland.

Other team members included Kayla Pavlick, Tyler Arinder, and Savannah Owens.

This is the second time in the past three years the team has qualified for this honor.  In 2008 the team competed at the Olympic Training Center Facilities in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

“Through participation in firearm safety training and shooting sports activities, these young men and women are being given the opportunity to learn responsibility, sportsmanship, self-discipline, and other qualities critical to their development as productive citizens,” said McCarty.
