Hickey Receives Taylor Moore Scholarship at NAHS
Kyle Hickey was awarded the Taylor Moore Memorial Scholarship at the New Albany High School graduation ceremony on May 22, 2009. The $5000 competitive scholarship is given each year to a deserving NAHS student who plans to attend college in Mississippi. The scholarship selection process includes review of applicants’ honors and essays by a selection committee followed by interviews of the top five applicants.
Kyle is the son of Kenneth and Beverly Hickey. He is a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where he is an active member of the choir and the youth group. Kyle plans to attend University of Mississippi in the fall to major in Music Education.Â
An honor graduate, Hickey was selected to the 2009 Hall of Fame. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Future Educators of America, Future Business Leaders of America, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Kyle was also a member of Youth Congress, the History Bowl Team and the Math and Science Team.
At New Albany High School, Hickey was a member of the band where he served as band captain and section leader. Hickey was also named All State Musician in 2008 and to the Mid-South Honor Band.Â
Kyle has participated in the school musicals for the past three years. He was a member of the orchestra for The Wiz in 2007 and a cast member of High School Musical in 2008. Kyle was a lead cast member of in 2009 portraying the Beast.Â
During the spring semester, he received several awards and scholarships including the John Philip Sousa Band Award, James Scott Houston Award, Bausch & Lomb Science Award, Troy Garrett/McAlister’s Memorial Scholarship, and the University of Mississippi Band and Academic Excellence Scholarships.Â
Hickey has been involved in many community organizations including Sav-a-Life and the American Red Cross. He has also served as a volunteer for Vacation Bible School, Feed the Children, and Operation Christmas Child.Â
The Taylor Moore Scholarship was established by Bobby and Minerva Moore in memory of their son who died in 2000. Taylor Moore was a 1988 honor graduate of W.P. Daniel High School. He was Mr. DHS, Most Popular, Most Dignified, and Class Favorite and was active in student government. Moore played first base for the DHS baseball team, and received numerous academic honors. He went on to receive his bachelors and masters degrees in business administration from Mississippi State University.
The scholarship established in his memory has been awarded for five years to outstanding graduates of New Albany High School. Past recipients of the Taylor Moore Scholarship are Stacy Stepp, Darden Holmes, Kyle Kimbrough, and Ivy Lauren Williams.
