The New Albany Schools and Union County Schools held a joint staff development on Monday, August 6, 2007 at the New Albany High School Auditorium. Governor Haley Barbour spoke to the group of educators, focusing primarily on the role of education in the economic development of Mississippi. He stated that Mississippi’s greatest asset is our “human capital”, and he encouraged teachers to continue to challenge students to meet their highest potential.

Dr. Charles Garrett, Superintendent of the New Albany Schools said, “We were honored to have Governor Barbour join us. We are working now on developing the career paths in education that Governor Barbour mentioned through the joint High School Redesign grant that the city and county schools share.” Garrett added, “Our community is preparing for our future with Toyota, and the schools play a tremendous role in providing a quality workforce.”

The joint staff development events began with complimentary br akfast provided by BNA Bank, followed by an opening prayer from Bro. Bruce Taylor, Senior Pastor of First United Methodist Church. Union County Superintendent, John Weeden and Union County School Board President, Buddy Dixon addressed the group, as did New Albany School Board President, Cathy McClinton and Dr. Charles Garrett, Superintendent. New Albany Mayor Tim Kent offered words of encouragement for teachers and administrators beginning the school year.

The guest speaker was LaDonna Gatlin, award winning entertainer and sister to the legendary Gatlin Bothers. Through music and humor, Gatlin related some basic principals of life such as doing the right thing, realizing your potential, and valuing time. Her inspirational presentation encouraged educators to “sing their song” as they begin the new year.
