The New Albany High School had two Envirothon Teams that competed in the North Area Competition on March 20 at the University of Mississippi Field Station in Oxford.  Team members included:  Yesenia Rivera, Ruth Rivera, Hunter Berryman, Josh Richey, Justin Wilcox, Lindsay Sappington, Ke Xin Weng, Isaac Estrada, and Ocean Fernando.  The team is coached by Betty Short and Jim Muncie.

After intense training, this team competed in the area competition.  The Mississippi Envirothon, a program of the Mississippi Association of Conservation Districts, is a hands-on natura resource competition designed to challenge students in grades nine through twelve to explore the natural world around them – testing their knowledge in the categories of aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and current issues.  “Envirothon is an excellent program for high school students,” remarked one student.  “We are tested on our knowledge of the environment, but also get the chance to check out some vocational interests and have fun at the same time.”

Through local soil and water conservation districts, volunteers and resource personnel from state and federal natural resource agencies and organizations have been working with educators and sharing their environmental expertise to ready the teams for this competition.  These resource professionals were on hand to assist with testing and judging at the area competition, and will be assisting with the statewide competition as well.

The team consisting of Lindsay Sappington, Yesenia Rivera, Ke Xin Weng, Isaac Estrada, and Josh Richey advances to state level competition.

The Mississippi Envirothon is funded by a grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.
