The New Albany School District (NASD) in partnership with the Union County Development Association (UCDA) has announced the creation of the Mary V. Golding Math Chair at New Albany High School (NAHS). Upon appointment, this outstanding math teacher will teach a variety of math classes, serve as the chairperson of the math department at NAHS and as lead teacher in the department. UCDA and former students of Mrs. Golding will supplement the selected chairperson’s yearly salary in the amount of $10,000 for three years.

The late Mary V. Golding invested her entire career teaching high school mathematics in New Albany and preparing her students to use math in higher education and in their careers. She has long been respected by her students as an outstanding mathematics teacher.

“One of the main purposes of establishing the Mary V. Golding Math Chairperson is to insure that the math programs and instruction are staying current by attending workshops and national conferences,” said Lance Evans, Principal of NAHS. “Our goal is to continue leading the way for excellence in education and be among the top mathematics departments in the state.” Evans added that the Chairperson will work with the department to improve mathematics scores on the ACT and subject area tests.

The Chairperson will work with administration during the summer to help plan and prepare for the coming year. In addition, the Chairperson will give detailed progress reports regarding student data to school administration during the school year.

Other duties of the Chairperson includes planning professional development for mathematics teachers, researching math instruction at all levels, and assisting in progress monitoring of all math students. The Chairperson will also observe other mathematics teachers and assist administration in providing feedback to improve specific teach skills.

Because of the high expectations of this position and added responsibilities to their regular teaching duties, a $10,000 supplement will be paid to the Chairperson. This money will be funded by former students of Golding and be distributed through UCDA.

“The establishment of the Mary V. Golding Chairperson for Mathematics at New Albany High School is the beginning of a new wave of community involvement in and support for our schools in New Albany,” said Phil Nanney, Executive Director of UCDA. “This effort will place additional academic tools in the hands of our faculty so that they will be able to provide our students the best mathematics education possible.”

Dr. Charles Garrett, Superintendent of New Albany Schools, says the district has currently opened this position up to math teachers within the district to see if there is interest. The NASD will also advertise the position and hopes to have the Chairperson in place before the start of school in August.

Patricia Wiseman, NAHS School Reporter

Good week to you all, New Albany! I am sad to say that this is my last time to report the weekly news. I have enjoyed my time for being your NAHS reporter, and I appreciate your feedback and praise these past nine weeks. Your comments mean a lot to me as well as shape me into the writer I hope to be one day!

And now, to the news for the last time…Congratulations to all students who were recognized at the Awards Ceremony last Monday! Your contributions and hard work truly made a difference toward yourselves and the school! Keep up the hard work! I would especially like to mention one special scholarship that was being given that night…It's hard to believe that nearly a year ago, we lost a beloved student---Marshuan Braxton (aka "The Prince of NA.") On June 21, 2009, during a mission trip to Costa Rica, Marshuan lost his life as a huge wave took him, causing him to drown. In memory of this tragedy, our student body president, Callie Creekmore, planned the Marshuan Braxton Scholarship. Callie, along with the rest of the NAHS Student Council, coordinated events and projects (such as the Tennis Block Party and selling Prince of NA T-shirts) ---raising $1500! This money would be presented to one student of the 2010 Senior Class. In order to receive this scholarship, this student should demonstrate good character and leadership towards both his/her peers as well as the school. The lucky student who received the Marshuan Braxton scholarship on Awards Night was none other than Amanda Frazier. Amanda is an Honor student who is involved in several school activities, such as Anchor Club, Science National Honor Society, National Honor Society, the HUNCH team, and the Krewe of Grenouille. She is ranked the third top student in the 2010 Senior Class. Upon graduation, Amanda plans to attend the University of North Alabama and major in Nursing. Congratulations, Amanda, and may you be successful in all that you do in the future!

The Athletic Banquet last Tuesday was a success! Kudos to Bobby Coltharp and Callie Creekmore who were the recipients of the Bulldog Award---the highest athletic honor that our students could receive.

Also, congratulations to the upcoming Senior Mentors of Camp Freshmen! This year's Senior mentor roster includes: Chantel Shead, Rebekah Joslin, Kayla Condon, Haven Boyd, Adam Coombs, Haley McBryde, Tarver Reeder, Danica Gray, Cody Cissom, Porshe White, Lindsey Powell, Parker Hill, Brittany Ellett, Anna Claire Stokes, Ellen Tarrant, Kaitlyn Cochran, Marbreshia Ticer, Jake Neuhaus, Paige Green, Taylor McCreight, Russell Browning, Tyler Jackson, Jamie Benefield, Micha Washington, Caroline Stroud, and Victoria Clift. Throughout this summer, it is the Senior Mentors' responsibility to go around local business areas and convince people to send monetary donations for Camp Freshmen. All details will be explained during a mandatory Camp Freshmen meeting, which will be on Tuesday, June 15th, at 9:00 a.m. in the Media Center. Camp Freshmen will take place on Tuesday, August 3rd. I would like to say best wishes to this year's Senior Mentors, and I know you all will be great leaders to the incoming freshmen!

NAHS students of the 2010-2011 school year…summer reading assignments can be downloaded from the school website, www.newalbanyschools.us, under the link "2010 Summer Reading Programs." This applies to all English levels (regular, accelerated and gifted). Be sure to have these summer reading assignments done! Believe me; it will leave a good impression towards your English teachers for the upcoming year!

For those who bought an NAHS DVD from the Journalism Department, orders will be issued throughout exam week. This DVD includes videos that can be viewed on the school website and are created by members of the Maroon and White Journalism Staff.

Graduation will occur the following day at 8:00 p.m. at Kitchen's Field (Middle School gym if raining). Seniors are to report to the cafeteria no later than 7:00. Dress code applies. Please be on time and on your best behavior, seniors! This will mean a lot to Ms. Burchfield, who has spent all year preparing for this special event just for you!

Remember to keep checking our school website, www.nahighschool.com for new videos this summer. The journalism class has been creating lots of movies the last few weeks in order for you to have fresh new videos. Look forward to seeing: “Piñatas”…another day at NA, the history of Kitchens Field, a day in the life of a non-hearing student, the Fine Arts department of NAHS, history of “The Pride of NA”, Frog-a-Nanny 2010, and more. Just last week the student body election speeches were added. Thanks to all who purchased the DVD set, we think you will be really glad you did!

And now, I would like to close this news update with some "Words of Wisdom" to each class:

-Freshmen…no longer will you be the "rookies" of high school next year. You all have made a great start on your high school journey. Continue to study hard (especially in English next year) and with determination and motivation, success is possible in anything you do.

-Sophomores…next year you will be considered as part of the upper-class students. These next two years will be the most memorable times of your high school life. So much lies ahead of you. So make the right choices and you will go far.

-Juniors…your time to shine has come! Keep in mind that senior year will go by quickly, and this may be the last time you will get to spend with some of your high school friends. Make the most of your final year in high school! Have fun, but as always, study hard!

-Seniors…you have come a long way. A chapter of your lives has ended, but with every ending leads to a new beginning. The past has gone, but the future is now. You have the ability to determine how you are going to live your lives. So continue to chase after your dreams, and remember, God is always on your side. You just have to have faith in Him, and you will be awarded happiness and success.

It has, indeed, been a memorable year. Once again, it has been a pleasure of being your NAHS reporter. It is one of those high school memories that I will cherish after graduation. To everyone whom I became acquainted with for the past few years…thank you for all the memories and making my high school years (especially senior year) an amazing experience! I wish everyone a great and safe summer! God bless!

Jon Mark Nail, a 2004 graduate of New Albany High School (NAHS), returned to his alma mater on Monday, May 17 as the guest speaker for the NAHS Honors’ Breakfast. Nail is currently attending Graduate School at Regent University in Virginia where he is pursuing a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Directing. Nail has written and directed four films, three of which have received awards. Nail is currently on the Council of Graduate Students and serves as a Senator for the Film School.

Nail’s message to the NAHS honor students was to start now and focus on preparing for the future. “Whatever you think you want to do, you have to go do and it all starts now and here at New Albany High School.” He encouraged them to learn, listen, and take advantage of all the opportunities offered at NAHS.

Nail gave much credit to Joan Smith and the “Mississippi Writers” course she taught him while he was a student at NAHS. “Mrs. Smith gave me the tools and encouragement to do what I am doing now,” he said. “She always reminded me to write what I know, think, and feel. That is a lesson I have taken with me through college.”

“I loved getting to speak to students at New Albany High School,” said Nail. “My hope was that I could take advantage of my youth and recount some of the things I wish I had heard while I was still in high school.” Nail said he wanted the students to know that even though it is sometimes hard to go after what you want, nothing will make you happier.

Patricia Wiseman, NAHS School Reporter

Hello, New Albany! It’s now that week that we’ve all been waiting for---THE LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL! I’m sure that everyone is excited for a long summer break full of vacation, relaxation, and fun. I know I am! But before I try stimulating more excitement for summer holidays, I have a list of announcements and updates I would like to share.

First off, I would like to recognize Jud Roberts for making the cheerleading squad at Mississippi State University. As a senior here at NAHS, Jud is a very active student. Aside from being an Honor Roll student, he participates in many school activities, such as the Vista Yearbook Staff, the football team, the Krewe of Grenouille, and a cast member of this year’s musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Upon graduation, Jud will be attending Mississippi State, where he will work on his dream to become a pediatrician as well as cheer for the Bulldogs. He is the first NAHS male student to make the cheerleading squad at MSU. Congratulations, Jud, on your hard work and achievement, and good luck on your future plans!

Anyone interested in ordering an NAHS DVD from the journalism department, it is not too late to order. The deadline to turn in orders has been extended to Friday, May 21st. Please turn in orders to either Mrs. Thompson or Mrs. Waldrop. DVDs will be delivered during the following week (exam week). Don’t forget to keep checking the website www.nahighschool.com for new videos all summer. We have created many in the last few weeks that will be added throughout the summer. The most recent videos include: After school Activities, Student Council Speeches, Life Skills Class, the Chorus and Band Spring Concert and NAES Australian Animal Walk.

The NAHS Honor’s Breakfast was held on Monday, May 17th in the cafeteria in honor of all the NAHS who are in both the honor roll and all-A Honor Roll. Following the breakfast was an assembly in the auditorium, where guest speaker and former NAHS student John Mark Nail presented his motivational speech to the students. John Mark Nail graduated at NAHS in 2004. He then went to Delta State University and is currently enrolled in Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The NAHS awards ceremony was held on Monday night, May 17th. This event honored many students for their hard work and dedication to the school. The Athletic Banquet took place on May 18th. It was held at the Middle School cafeteria and recognized all students who participate in any sports.

Any students who are enrolled in band for the following school year and are interested in trying out for Color Guard, Guard Captain, Percussion, Drum Major, Majorette, or Percussion, Auxiliary Tryouts will be held after school on Friday, May 21st in the band hall. Please see Mr. Carson, Ms. Dickerson, or Mr. Hall for graduation.

Senior exams will be held in the auditorium on Friday, May 21st, and Monday, May 24th. I would like to wish the seniors who are taking any finals good luck and study hard!

I hate to end this news update with a sad announcement. Our principal, Mr. Jay Foster will be leaving next year. He has been the principal here at NAHS for 7 years and has done a wonderful job administering to both the faculty and students. We will all miss him very much next year, and I would like to encourage everyone to thank him for his dedication to the school. I would also like to encourage everyone to welcome the new NAHS principal for next year---Mr. Lance Evans.

Well, that’s all the news I have for now. We had a great start at the school year, which has impacted on how this year flown by. Now…let’s make the end of this year even more amazing!
